A few words from Judge Monk, the Chamber President for the War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber
Thank you for taking time to consider attending this pre-application seminar. The War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber (WPAFCC) of the First-tier Tribunal (FTT) is one of the smallest Chambers but it is also one of the oldest, as the WPAFCC traces its roots back to the original Pensions Appeals Tribunals (PATs) established in 1917 during the First World War. The Chamber’s jurisdiction involves hearing appeals relating to claims for compensation made by either serving or former armed forces personnel. Claims are made under either the old Service Pensions Order (the SPO, broadly relating to injuries sustained by service personnel before 6 April 2005) and the new tariff-based Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) for cases arising after April 2005.In practice most appeals are either about entitlement, so issues of causation or assessment of disablement. All final hearings are heard by a panel of three so you will routinely sit with two specialist members, one medical member and one service member.
There is a small salaried team which consist of the Chamber President, 2 salaried judges, a chief medical member and two legal officers. As one of only two salaried judges you will have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of the Chamber's work and to be part of a very collegiate and supportive team.
A few words on the Social Security and Child Support Chamber
The SSCS Tribunal principally covers appeals against decisions taken by government departments (mainly, the Department for Work and Pensions and HMRC, but also some decisions by local authorities) on entitlement to social security benefits and liability to make child support payments. SSCS tribunals also hear appeals concerning vaccine damage payments, payments in consequence of diffuse mesothelioma and decisions in relation to NHS charges, and it will be considering appeals under the Infected Blood Compensation Scheme in the near future.
Please note that although the Judicial Office will be running the pre-application seminar, the actual recruitment campaign is being done and led by the Judicial Appointments Commission.
